Ralph Alvarado has risen quickly within the Kentucky State Senate through legislative victories that have covered a wide range of issues. In his first four months in office alone, Alvarado sponsored eight bills that passed the state Senate – the largest number of senate-sponsored bills to be passed in the 2015 Legislative Session. Recently, Alvarado was recognized by GOPAC as an Emerging Leader and has been asked to travel internationally, discussing health care solutions with China in our sister providence. This has allowed him to develop bipartisan, national and international connections to assist in serving the people of our district and the Commonwealth.

While serving his communities in Clark, Fayette and Montgomery County, Ralph Alvarado has been recognized for his efforts on behalf of survivors of sexual and domestic violence. He has made many strides towards more comprehensive health care regulations – regulations that create more options for underinsured patients who need treatment most and policy measures that improve protections for medical professionals and the patients they serve.  Alvarado has also championed pro-business issues and has twice received the prestigious Chamber of Commerce’s MVP Award: Going to Bat for Businesses.

“As the owner of a medical practice, I understand firsthand the ups and downs that our small businesses face to keep the doors open. I had to close my own business when those hardships became too great, and I have been blessed to open my practice once more. With experiences like these, I will continue to make sure that our counties receive the resources they need to do more than simply keep the lights on. With the right policy changes, I believe we will grow our local economies in new, dynamic ways – making what we once thought impossible to achieve, a sustainable reality.”

Alvarado has practiced medicine in Winchester, Kentucky since 1998, when he completed his Residency in Internal Medicine/Pediatrics at the University of Kentucky. He was President of Winchester Medical Associates until 2013, and recently, Alvarado reopened his practice, Alvarado Medical Services, PLLC, and is providing hospitalist work at Clark Regional Medical Center. Alvarado is a past physician with KentuckyOne Medical Group when he also served in a leadership capacity as a Regional Medical Director, Board Member, and Chairman of their Finance Committee. Alvarado is the former Chief of Staff for St. Joseph’ East Hospital in Lexington and past President of Medical Staff for both St. Joseph’s Hospital and St. Joseph’s East Hospital.

Alvarado has taken on national roles as a state legislator. He is a member of the executive committee of the National Conference of State Legislatures. He also completed the very competitive Toll Fellowship with the Council of State Governments. Alvarado is a member and Fellow of the American College of Physician, serving on the Governor’s Council within the Kentucky Chapter. He is a member of the American Medical Association, Clark County Medical Society, and was briefly member of the Board of Trustees (11th District) for the Kentucky Medical Association. Alvarado is a past member of the American Academy of Pediatrics and former Associate Professor for the University of Kentucky. He has volunteered his time with Rapha Ministries, a faith-based medical clinic that provides free health care to indigent populations who can’t afford health care insurance in Clark County.

Ralph and his wife, Dawn Alvarado, have celebrated 23 years of marriage. They have two children, Nathan and Sarina, and attend Grace Baptist Church in Winchester.
